Indian banks are projected to experience stronger credit growth, with net interest margins serving as a crucial factor for future performance.
Indian banks are forecasted to see enhanced credit growth and stable asset quality over the forthcoming quarters, as outlined in a recent review by the brokerage firm Equirus. This assessment is part of their mid-quarter evaluation regarding the banking sector’s performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.
Equirus noted that as we move into the second quarter of FY27, both asset quality and capital positions of banks remain robust. Additionally, the costs associated with deposits are nearing a stabilisation point, which is anticipated to positively influence the sector.
The firm emphasised that the outlook remains contingent upon several key factors: the recovery trajectory of net interest margins (NIMs), the growth of retail loans, particularly unsecured loans, and the potential for corporate capital expenditure to accelerate sufficiently. These elements are critical for sustaining the current momentum in loan growth.
“As we head into the latter half of FY27, monitoring the progression of net interest margin recovery will be crucial, alongside the durability of retail lending,” Equirus stated in their report. This statement reflects a cautious optimism regarding future earnings within the banks.
Overall, the banking sector is under close scrutiny as it adapts to evolving economic conditions and seeks to bolster its growth potential in light of these forecasts.
