Iranian Foreign Minister warns of immediate retaliation against threats as US and Iran engage in discussions to ease regional tensions.
As discussions continue in Doha between representatives of the United States and Iran, tensions remain high, particularly following recent statements from Iranian officials. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has signalled that Iran will react decisively to any threats directed at its citizens or leaders. In a message posted on X, Araghchi expressed concerns about comments made by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who indicated that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was ‘marked for death.’ Araghchi stated, ‘The President of the United States has committed the U.S. to muzzling its pets in Tel Aviv. If they ignore their master, Iran will school them. Any threat against our People and Leadership will receive Immediate Powerful Response.’ This statement underscores the fraught relationships at play as the United States and Iran navigate ongoing conflicts in the region. Concurrently, the US and Iranian delegates are meeting to discuss critical issues such as the future of shipping activities through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, the discussions aim to develop a framework for a lasting ceasefire and tackle the challenges posed by Iran’s nuclear programme. A memorandum of understanding facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan is in place, suggesting a tentative 60-day ceasefire while negotiations progress. Moreover, it addresses the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and outlines a timeline for reaching a more comprehensive agreement. Despite this diplomatic engagement, Esmaeil Baqaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, noted that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi is leading the talks but clarified that there are no plans for negotiations with American officials in the immediate future. The Iranian delegation’s presence in Doha has not altered Tehran’s stance on direct discussions with the United States, particularly in light of President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that such talks were on the agenda. As diplomatic efforts unfold, the situation remains dynamic, with both sides keenly aware of the potential for escalating tensions. The final outcomes of the negotiations may hold significant implications for regional stability in the Middle East.
