Experts Claim Strict Guidelines Could Have Prevented Thrissur Fireworks Tragedy

Experts suggest that better adherence to safety regulations could have avoided the deadly Thrissur fireworks accident that resulted in 14 fatalities.

In the wake of the tragic fireworks accident in Thrissur, Kerala, experts have asserted that the disaster could have been prevented with stricter implementation of safety guidelines. This incident, which took place recently, claimed the lives of 14 individuals and raised concerns regarding adherence to established safety protocols.

R. Venugopal, a former Joint Chief Controller of Explosives at the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, emphasised that the explosion occurred on premises that were not authorised and did not comply with the safety regulations outlined in the Explosives Rules. This situation highlights a critical gap in the enforcement of safety measures that were intended to safeguard against such tragedies.

This assertion comes a decade after the Puttingal fireworks accident, which resulted in the deaths of 110 people and led to significant scrutiny of safety practices within the fireworks industry. Following that incident, a judicial commission proposed a set of safety guidelines aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

Despite these recommendations, the recent accident in Thrissur indicates ongoing issues related to compliance and regulation enforcement. Experts believe that if the guidelines from the commission and other relevant authorities had been strictly followed, the loss of life could have been averted. R. Venugopal’s remarks reiterate the importance of adhering to safety regulations in industries that pose significant risks, such as fireworks manufacturing.

The Thrissur incident serves as a reminder of the need for rigorous oversight in areas governed by safety standards. Stakeholders in the fireworks industry, alongside regulatory bodies, are now faced with the urgent task of reassessing safety measures to prevent further tragedies in the future.
