Devastating floods in Nepal claim 903 lives, with around 4,200 individuals reported missing as rescue efforts continue amidst international aid.
A catastrophic flooding event has recently impacted north-central Nepal, resulting in the deaths of 903 individuals, as reported by local authorities. The floods, triggered by a glacier-related slope failure, have caused significant devastation in the region, with an alarming figure of approximately 4,200 people still unaccounted for.
Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that over 10,000 individuals have been rescued, which includes at least 323 foreign nationals. Although figures indicate that 80 Americans are among those missing, a State Department spokesperson has stated that 13 American citizens have managed to reach safety in Nepal.
The disaster began when a glacier failure initiated a rapid debris flow, travelling an estimated 62 miles downstream and striking populated areas. Eyewitness accounts depict a sudden onrush of water and debris, leading to extensive destruction.
The floods have particularly affected areas near the Nepal-China border, prompting international humanitarian responses. Countries such as India and China have begun delivering aid, with further assistance expected from the United States, United Arab Emirates, several other Asian nations, and international organisations.
“Relief and humanitarian assistance are being provided in the affected areas. We are deeply grateful to our friends and partners for their solidarity, goodwill and generous offers of support at this difficult time,” a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remarked.
Reports suggest that a significant number of the missing individuals were participating in a pilgrimage organised by the Isha Foundation, a Tennessee-based nonprofit, with many located in an immigration facility when the floods began.
Furthermore, the United States government has mobilised disaster response teams and pledged $500,000 in aid to facilitate emergency shelters and provide essential relief items for affected communities.
The U.S. Geological Survey has indicated that the flooding disaster was associated with a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, followed by another seismic event of magnitude 4.2 several hours later. Investigators remain uncertain whether the cause was a landslide or a glacial collapse, highlighting the complex nature of the geological events.
As the crisis continues, the Nepalese government is coordinating closely with international partners to facilitate both rescue operations and relief efforts, aiming to provide support for those impacted by this devastating natural disaster.
