A Russian drone attack on a weapons depot near Kyiv has killed 37 and led to extensive evacuations and a government inquiry into negligence.
A recent drone strike on a weapons depot near Kyiv has claimed 37 lives and necessitated the evacuation of almost 400 residents. The attack targeted a facility storing military supplies for Ukraine’s armed forces in the Bucha district, a residential area just outside the capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident, which occurred late on a Friday night, as a result of extensive negligence, stating, “The storage site definitely shouldn’t have been there.” He announced that an investigation had begun into the matter, focusing on the individuals responsible for housing explosives in close proximity to civilian areas.
The explosion caused several shells, mines, and drones at the depot to detonate, resulting in significant damage to surrounding buildings, including a care home for the elderly and disabled. The regional head, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that four children were among the 42 people injured in the incident. A rescue operation was still underway as officials worked to assess the full impact of the blast.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence acknowledged targeting the ammunition depot in Myla, a village located to the west of Kyiv. They claimed the depot contained components and launch boosters for long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. The explosion reportedly caused damage to approximately 130 homes in the vicinity.
Local resident Liubov Pavlenko described the aftermath, saying, “Everything is completely damaged. There are cracks all around the entire perimeter, and cracks around the windows. Basically, the structural integrity has been compromised.” She expressed her emotional turmoil as she surveyed her home, which lies about 200 metres from the explosion site.
President Zelensky condemned the decision to store munitions in such a populated area, labelling it as “absolutely unacceptable.” He highlighted that legislation prohibits the storage of ammunition near residential buildings, questioning the rationale behind this lapse in judgement. “Criminal proceedings have been opened on charges of official negligence,” he confirmed.
In a parallel to a previous incident in July, which also involved an ammunition warehouse in Vyshneve, Zelensky noted the pattern of negligence that has resulted in loss of life. That earlier explosion killed nine and injured many others, generating outrage over the lack of safety protocols.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky expressed disappointment that lessons from the earlier incident had seemingly gone unheeded. He indicated that previous investigations revealed serious shortcomings by a state-owned company regarding the compliance with regulations for storage of explosives.
“In the fifth year of the full-scale invasion, making the same mistakes over and over is criminal negligence,” Koretsky stated emphatically on social media. He emphasised that all responsible parties must face serious consequences to ensure that such tragedies do not reoccur.
In addition to this tragic strike, a 14-year-old was reported dead following a separate attack in the Boryspil district, while Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed the death of a two-year-old due to a drone crash in Obolonskyi. The mayor also reported five additional injuries from strikes that occurred in the capital the following morning. In total, five fatalities across Ukraine have been attributed to escalated violence in the past 24 hours.
Further attacks have been reported in various cities, including Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia. The Ukrainian military indicated that they successfully intercepted 233 Russian drones amid heightened aerial confrontations between the two nations.
In a parallel development, local officials in Russia indicated that strikes in Belgorod and Rostov had led to two deaths and 25 injuries. Russian online retailer Ozon stated that their logistics centres had also been targeted, leading to a suspension of operations at one location due to safety concerns.
As the conflict continues, the frequency and intensity of attacks from both sides appear to be escalating, raising alarm within the international community regarding the humanitarian implications of such actions.
