A leaked Congress list indicating possible candidates for Kerala’s Chief Minister role has been dropped by the BJP, stirring political discussions.
The political landscape in Kerala has intensified as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has retracted a leaked Congress list that showcased potential candidates for the Chief Ministerial position in the state. This development has sparked renewed debates over leadership within the United Democratic Front (UDF), the political alliance that includes the Congress party.
As the Congress high command continues deliberations regarding its candidate for the Chief Minister’s role, V D Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, has emerged as a focal point of support from his party’s base. A significant online campaign is taking shape, with advocates urging Rahul Gandhi and other leaders within the Congress to endorse Satheesan for the top post. Supporters argue that his leadership has been vital in the UDF’s resurgence in recent elections.
Hundreds of messages have flooded Rahul Gandhi’s social media accounts, promoting hashtags such as #VDSatheesan and #SupportVDSatheesan. Comments highlight Satheesan’s long-term commitment and visibility in Kerala politics, suggesting he represents the preferred choice for many party sympathisers. “Leadership is about continuous struggle, commitment, visibility, and accountability throughout the journey. VD Satheesan has already proven that leadership through his dedication and political fight over the years,” read one comment on a social media post from Gandhi.
Field demonstrations have also surfaced, as Congress workers organised marches across various districts advocating for Satheesan’s nomination. Placards reading ‘Let the one who led the war, lead the land’ were seen during a protest held in front of the Kerala Secretariat. Activists in some districts even removed promotional materials related to K C Venugopal, another chief contender for the role.
In the midst of this grassroots movement, tensions within the party have also escalated, reflected by the Idukki district committee’s decision to suspend several members for supporting Satheesan publicly. The discussions on leadership within the Congress remain unresolved, despite Satheesan, Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala being identified as primary candidates.
The UDF’s recent electoral success has complicated internal party dynamics, prompting the Congress Legislature Party to authorise its high command to make the final decision regarding the Chief Ministerial nomination. This resolution was reached during a recent meeting attended by senior party leaders, including AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken.
Supporters of Satheesan underscore his contributions to revitalising the UDF and his ability to unite diverse voter segments, reinstating Congress’s prominence among minority communities. Many constituents have expressed their expectation that Satheesan should lead the new government, asserting that his leadership is fundamental to fulfilling the UDF’s mandate for effective governance.
Intensified lobbying by rival camps is indicative of the competitive atmosphere as all factions vie for influence within the party. While Venugopal’s allies highlight his rapport with party MLAs and central leadership, Chennithala’s supporters draw attention to his extensive administrative background.
Ultimately, the Congress high command’s upcoming decision will follow consultations with the party’s lawmakers and coalition partners as the race for the Chief Ministership in Kerala continues to unfold.
