A viral photo purportedly showing a mother and child from the Jabalpur cruise tragedy has been confirmed as fake, according to local authorities.
The tragic incident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, India, resulted in the deaths of at least nine people on Thursday, with a search continuing for additional missing individuals, including a man and three children. Among the images that circulated following the accident, one purportedly captured a mother holding her child as they drowned. This image drew significant attention and was shared widely across social media platforms.
A diver present at the scene expressed shock at the sight of the lost child, further amplifying public interest in the story. However, the Jabalpur District Collector later confirmed that the widely shared photograph was not genuine. Posting on social media, the Collector specified, “This photo is AI-generated or from some other source. It has no connection with the Bargi cruise accident.”
The Jabalpur Collector’s declaration came as part of efforts to clarify misinformation surrounding the incident. As rescue operations progressed, authorities reported that 28 of the 41 passengers aboard the ill-fated cruise boat were rescued safely. Despite these rescues, the current toll of confirmed deaths stands at nine, with six individuals unaccounted for.
With search efforts intensifying, army divers and disaster response teams have expanded their operations to cover a five-kilometre area in the backwaters of the Bargi Dam, which is situated downstream of the Narmada River. Anjul Ayank Mishra, the sub-divisional officer of police, indicated that the increased search scope aims to locate any remaining victims.
The tragedy has prompted local police to prepare an FIR (First Information Report) related to the accident, a common procedure in incidents involving loss of life. The sombre event has touched many, sparking discussions on social media while also highlighting the challenges posed by the rapid dissemination of misinformation in the wake of such disasters.
