Ex-Diplomat Navdeep Suri Raises Concerns Over Citizenship Issues

Former diplomat Navdeep Suri highlights challenges in proving citizenship during Punjab’s election roll revision process.

Former Indian diplomat Navdeep Suri, who has served for over three decades in various countries including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia, has raised alarms about the difficulties he encountered during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab.

Suri, in a series of posts on social media platform X, pointed out a discrepancy in his electoral records from 2003, which surfaced during the revision process. He reported that after submitting his Voter Identification card and Aadhaar card, he received a notification from a volunteer stating that some details did not align with the records from the 2003 revision.

He was informed that the booth level officer (BLO) required him to collect a notice and return with unspecified documentation to substantiate his Indian citizenship. When Suri mentioned that he was not in India in 2003, he was asked to provide his passport as proof.

In his social media post, Navdeep Suri expressed his frustration, stating, “I happen to have documents other than Voter ID and Aadhaar card. But can’t help asking: If I have trouble establishing my citizenship after representing India in three countries, what’s the fate of the common citizen? Ease of Living, I presume!”

There was no immediate response from the Election Commission regarding Suri’s claims, leaving several questions unanswered about the citizenship verification process in India, especially in the context of the ongoing electoral revisions. Suri’s case has drawn attention to broader concerns about the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens in proving their citizenship, amid ongoing debates about voter registration and identification in the country.
