Blind visitors of the Flower Dome can rent robot dogs as guides from Q3 2026

SINGAPORE: Starting Q3 of 2023, visually impaired visitors of Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome can rent a robotic guide dog to navigate the park on their own, with no human guide needed.

This new service was officially announced by the authorities at a ‘Reunion’ event on March 22, declaring that this is another step forward for Singapore to create a more inclusive environment for all.

Local technology company RoamAssist designed this smart navigation device specifically for the Flower Dome. The device is not just a robot, but a smart guide that will help the blind with their visit to the tourist attraction. It has a handle designed to be ergonomic, making it comfortable and stable to hold.

The robotic guide dog was pre-programmed with a complete tour route for the Flower Dome, and it covers all the main plant exhibits. During the tour, the robotic guide also provides audio guidance, introducing the varieties and characteristics of various plants. When the robotic guide dog senses an obstacle, its sensing system will automatically stop or avoid the device, making it very safe to use.  Additionally, the robotic dog guide can adjust its route according to the flow of people on site, avoiding crowded areas.

Yan.sg reported that each rental of the robotic dog is typically for one to two hours, however it can be adjusted depending on the person’s needs. This service is also for free, with no fee or deposit required to use. It is recommended that first-time users should be accompanied by a friend, family member, or a staff member for them to familiarize themselves with the operation before they can handle everything on their own.

The robotic guide dog is set to launch in the third quarter of this year, with the exact date to be announced later. Reservations to use this service can be made through the park’s website, hotline, or on-site desk. Visitors who wish to use this service are required to provide a proof of visual impairment for free rental.

Aside from the robotic guide dogs, Gardens by the Bay is further expanding accessibly and is planning to test a wearable device called ‘AiSee’ in the first quarter of 2027. This is a device in which voice recognition can help visually impaired people learn more about the exhibits.

Moreover, in June 2026, Gardens by the Bay will launch a free online sensory map for autistic visitors and caregivers, giving them the chance to preview the lighting, sound, and smell environments of different areas.

The park plans to attract 3,000 young volunteers as well to participate in barrier-free services by 2028, while still continuing to expand the ‘Garden Gift’ project which was launched in 2012 and has already benefited almost 30,000 people.
