Railway Board Delays Vande Bharat Extension to Jammu and Srinagar

The Railway Board has postponed the Vande Bharat Express extension, originally set for March 1, citing unavoidable circumstances.

The Indian Railway Board has decided to suspend the planned extension of the Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar, which was scheduled to begin on March 1, 2026. The announcement was made mere hours after Northern Railways had confirmed the extension earlier in the day.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal stated, “Due to some unavoidable circumstances, the notification programme of Vande Bharat’s extension from March 1 has been put on hold by the Railway Board till further advice.” He also indicated that further information regarding the service would be distributed as it becomes available and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Initially, the Northern Railways had communicated the excitement surrounding this service, stating that it would establish direct rail connectivity between the twin capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir. The proposed extension was intended to enhance travel options between these regions, facilitating easier access for local residents and visitors alike. The premium Vande Bharat Express service was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, following the completion of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link project. This initiative aims to provide year-round rail service to the Kashmir Valley.

Currently, the Vande Bharat Express operates between Srinagar and Katra, utilising an eight-car rake. Plans were underway to upgrade this service, transitioning to 20-car coaches for the route between Jammu and Srinagar. The unexpected hold on the extension has raised questions among potential passengers and stakeholders in the region who were looking forward to improved transport options.

The Railway Board’s decision comes at a time when efforts to boost infrastructure and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir have been a focal point for the government. As further developments unfold, officials are expected to reveal a new launch date for the Vande Bharat Express extension once the current issues are resolved.
