Head coach Amol Muzumdar motivates India’s youth to play boldly in the T20 Asia Cup, despite recent performance challenges.
Amol Muzumdar, the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, has called on his young squad to pursue an aggressive style of play during the upcoming T20 Asia Cup. This encouragement comes amid concerns over inconsistent performances in past tournaments. As India prepares for a significant six-month period that includes the Asian Games, Muzumdar remains optimistic about the potential of his players.
India, which has experienced difficulties recently—losing nine of their last 16 T20 International matches—will commence its T20 Asia Cup campaign against Thailand on Sunday. In remarks to reporters, Muzumdar emphasised the need for his team to focus less on past form and more on their growth potential.
“We don’t pay too much attention to the form. You are talking about 16 T20Is in the last six months. But at the same time, we know what scope of improvement this team has got,” he stated. The coach highlighted that although the squad is young, there is significant potential for development, with a focus on playing aggressive cricket.
Muzumdar specifically acknowledged the crucial role that spinners might play under the humid conditions expected in Dubai. He remarked, “Spinners definitely are crucial. We have got a variety of spinners in this side… the pitches have got a little bit of help for the spinners as well. So, I guess some good signs for us.”
Regarding the prospect of a match between India and Pakistan, Muzumdar opted to maintain a focus on cricket itself, insisting on the importance of preparing for each game individually. He mentioned, “We try to play the best cricket on that particular day. And we will speak about this when we play that game. But at the moment, we are focusing on tomorrow’s game.”
In addition to the T20 Asia Cup, preparations for the Asian Games in Japan, scheduled for September-October, have been a priority. Muzumdar reported on a successful 15-day training camp, stating, “We had a fantastic camp at the Centre of Excellence… We worked really hard on our fitness and fielding.”
On adapting to the harsh conditions in Dubai, he acknowledged the heat and humidity but assured that the team is focused on acclimatising. “Most of the team members have participated in the T20 World Cup, so we know the conditions here.”
Muzumdar did not disclose the final playing eleven for the tournament, underscoring the importance of player readiness. He commented, “Whoever is there in the 15, they should be ready to play in the 11th. We try and avoid talking into the set-up.”
India, although a record seven-time winner, enters this competition without being the defending champions. Reflecting on the team’s competitive spirit, Muzumdar noted, “This group has been a special one. There is no doubt about it… They are hungry for success.”
However, the squad faces a setback as Jemimah Rodrigues will miss the tournament due to a right hamstring injury. Muzumdar expressed the team’s sentiments, stating, “I have always maintained that she is a clutch player for us. She will definitely be missed.”
With the tournament about to begin, the Indian women’s team aims to establish a strong performance as they look ahead to a demanding competitive calendar.
