Apple is designing an iOS feature to lock devices instantly in the event of a theft, using existing technology for enhanced security.
Apple Inc. is reportedly in the process of developing a feature for its iOS system that would autonomously lock users’ phones should they be snatched. This new functionality aims to utilise the existing technologies in the iPhone, including its accelerometer and potentially its integration with the Apple Watch, to detect the moment of a theft, as noted by technology news outlet 9to5Mac.
In many urban environments, phone theft has become a growing issue, with thieves commonly operating on motorbikes to swiftly snatch phones from individuals. According to a recent report by Wired, an unlocked smartphone can be valued up to $1,000, significantly more than a locked device. Thieves benefit from accessing personal information and apps on unlocked phones, which can provide easier access to bank accounts and other sensitive data.
This feature would add to Apple’s ongoing commitment to enhancing device security. Current security measures include the Activation Lock, which prohibits thieves from disabling tracking features or resetting the device without the appropriate Apple Account credentials. Additionally, the Find My app enables users to locate their missing or stolen devices.
Users are also offered various measures requiring biometric authentication to unlock their devices. One such feature, Security Delay, necessitates a waiting period before making substantial changes, such as altering major passwords, ensuring an extra layer of security through biometric verification.
At this time, the timeline for the launch of this new feature remains uncertain. If the report from 9to5Mac holds true, the forthcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled from June 8 to June 12, presents an opportunity for Apple to reveal details about the next iOS version. This may provide further insight into the anticipated feature aimed at addressing phone theft.
