China-DPRK Opens New Yalu River Bridge to Enhance Trade

A new bridge linking China and North Korea has opened, fostering trade and exchanges amid improving bilateral relations.

The New Yalu River Bridge, which spans 3 kilometres across the Yalu River, officially opened to traffic on Thursday. This new infrastructure connects the Chinese city of Dandong with Sinuiju in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), marking a significant moment in the bilateral relations between these neighbouring countries.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described the bridge as ‘an important facility for connectivity’ that would enhance trade and exchanges between the two nations. The opening ceremony signifies a warming trend in economic ties, which had been considerably affected by political tensions in previous years.

Originally slated for completion in 2014, the bridge faced delays primarily due to North Korea’s cessation of construction on its side of the border. The New Yalu River Bridge serves as a modern alternative to the decades-old Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which was built during the Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula between 1937 and 1943.

The bridge is expected to play a crucial role in increasing the volume of trade, which last year saw a recovery to $2.7 billion, largely driven by Chinese exports to North Korea. However, experts caution that a significant surge in trade is unlikely, given ongoing United Nations sanctions against North Korea. According to Kang Jun-young, a professor focusing on Chinese studies, North Korea remains wary of excessive Chinese imports that could diminish its sovereignty in the domestic market.

China has historically been North Korea’s primary trading partner, and the relationship is underscored by a mutual defence treaty. The alliance, described as ‘close as lips and teeth’ by former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, has experienced fluctuations, particularly due to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. There have been signs of renewed cooperation, particularly following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pyongyang in June 2026.

The New Yalu River Bridge is seen as a symbol of improving ties. It comes at a time when North Korea has been strengthening its relationship with Russia, notably amidst the geopolitical changes following the Ukraine conflict, which may further influence its economic and diplomatic strategies.

The successful opening of the bridge reflects efforts by both countries to enhance their strategic partnership while navigating the complexities imposed by international sanctions and regional security dynamics.
