CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao claims the Women’s Reservation Bill is being exploited for electoral advantages ahead of state elections.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary, V. Srinivasa Rao, has accused the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of using the Women’s Reservation Bill for electoral benefits. In a press conference held in Vijayawada, he voiced concerns that the government has revived the issue ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Rao stated that invoking the Bill, which was enacted in 2023, for political purposes is a betrayal of women. He questioned the motives behind the government’s timing, suggesting that the focus on the Bill serves electoral strategies rather than genuine commitment to advancing women’s representation in politics.
The Women’s Reservation Bill aims to reserve a significant percentage of seats for women in legislative bodies, a move hailed by many as essential for enhancing female participation in governance. However, critics like Rao argue that its presentation as an electoral tool undermines the intended goals of the legislation.
