Bollywood music has long been synonymous with the festival of Holi, celebrated across India and by Indian communities worldwide. Iconic tracks continue to define the colour-filled celebrations, blending upbeat rhythms with festive narratives.

One of the most enduring Holi anthems is Balam Pichkari from the 2013 romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, directed by Ayan Mukerji. Composed by Pritam and sung by Vishal Dadlani and Shalmali Kholgade, the song features actors Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin celebrating Holi in Manali.

From the 2003 drama Baghban, the song Hori Khele Raghuveera remains a favourite for its blend of Braj Bhasha and Awadhi dialects. Performed by Amitabh Bachchan, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, and Sukhwinder Singh, it showcases traditional Holi rituals alongside the film’s family-oriented storytelling.

Classic songs such as Soni Soni from Mohabbatein (2000) and Holi Ke Din from the cult film Sholay continue to feature prominently in holiday playlists. Soni Soni combines the voices of Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar, while Holi Ke Din presents Dharmendra and Hema Malini leading celebrations in the fictional village of Ramgarh. Similarly, Rang Barse from the 1981 film Silsila remains a perennial favourite, amplified by Amitabh Bachchan’s resonant vocals.

Holi has also been a strategic period for film releases in Bollywood. Historically, filmmakers have timed releases to coincide with the festival, taking advantage of public holidays and the increased potential for box office revenue. Films released during Holi have had varied commercial success.

Romantic-comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, earned Rs 147.28 crore domestically and Rs 223 crore worldwide. In contrast, action-comedy Bachchan Pandey, despite initial anticipation, collected only Rs 51.04 crore in India and Rs 74.20 crore globally, marking a commercial failure.

Other notable Holi releases include Saina (2021) starring Parineeti Chopra, which grossed Rs 1.10 crore, and Angrezi Medium (2020), Irrfan Khan’s final film, which was severely affected by the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, earning Rs 10.18 crore in its first six days. On the other hand, historical drama Kesari (2019) featuring Akshay Kumar grossed Rs 155.70 crore worldwide, emerging as a hit.

Films such as Pari (2018) and Himmatwala (2013) received mixed receptions and modest box office returns, while Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) and suspense thriller Kahaani (2012) were commercially successful. Race (2008) also benefited from the Holi release timing, collecting Rs 60.64 crore domestically.

Context The festival of Holi continues to influence Bollywood both culturally and commercially. Iconic songs often enjoy renewed popularity each year, forming a bridge between generations and reinforcing the festival’s vibrant ethos. Meanwhile, the timing of film releases during Holi demonstrates the industry’s reliance on holidays to maximise viewership, though outcomes remain unpredictable. The absence of a major Holi release in 2026 breaks a 15-year tradition, highlighting shifts in production schedules and market strategies.

Box office trends indicate that while star power and festive timing can boost earnings, audience reception and competition ultimately determine commercial success. The enduring popularity of Holi-themed songs, however, underscores the cultural significance of the festival in Indian cinema.
