England secures historic win, chasing down Ireland’s 281 with 11.5 overs to spare in the first ODI of the series.
In the first One Day International (ODI) match held in Leicester, England achieved a remarkable victory over Ireland, successfully chasing down a target of 282 runs. The hosts completed the chase with six wickets remaining and 11.5 overs to spare, marking a record chase in women’s ODIs.
Maia Bouchier, who scored an impressive 104 runs from 95 balls, played a pivotal role in the win. Alongside her, Sophia Dunkley contributed significantly with 73 runs off 61 balls. England finished at 283 for 4 in 38.1 overs, successfully surpassing Ireland’s total of 281 for 5 which they set in their full 50 overs.
Ireland’s innings was bolstered by Gaby Lewis, who scored 69 runs off 89 balls, along with Amy Hunter, who anchored their side with 62 runs off 90 balls. Rebecca Stokell provided a solid finish, with an unbeaten 54 runs off 48 balls.
After the match, England captain Charlie Dean expressed her pride in the team’s performance and acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in their fielding. “Amazing to chase a high total like that down. The way we did it was credit to the girls,” she commented. “We probably could have been tighter with the ball, to be honest, but to restrict them and then put a performance like that was brilliant.”
Dean also praised Bouchier and Dunkley for their opening partnership, which set a strong foundation for the chase. She noted, “Trying to take on that powerplay at the start feels like a blueprint on how to bat in 50-over cricket, and they did it remarkably.”
Ireland’s captain, Gaby Lewis, reflected on her team’s performance, stating, “The way they attacked that powerplay put our bowlers under the pump and we struggled to build pressure. There are definitely positives with the bat.”
She highlighted the improvements made since their previous series against the West Indies, stating, “We were disappointed in the West Indies series. To bounce back and work on that, we were happy to see.”
Player of the Match, Maia Bouchier, also shared her thoughts, saying, “Obviously very happy to get that big score. We talked in the dressing room about being confident in the first 10 and as a team we played so well and took the pressure off at the end.”
