The latest Minecraft Java snapshot unveils the Sulfur Caves biome and the versatile Sulfur Cube mob, promising new gameplay innovations.
A new update for Minecraft’s Java edition has been released, introducing significant features that aim to enhance gameplay. The Chaos Cubed snapshot adds the Sulfur Caves biome and introduces a unique new mob, the Sulfur Cube, which developers expect will inspire innovative gameplay, particularly in minigames.
The Sulfur Caves biome is identifiable by Sulfur Springs visible on the surface, leading players to illuminate interiors filled with vibrant Sulfur and Cinnabar blocks. Notably, water pools in this biome contain a new block called Potent Sulfur, which generates gas bubbles that can induce nausea in players who come too close. Players can also craft Potent Sulfur from regular Sulfur blocks by combining nine together.
The focal point of the snapshot is the Sulfur Cube, a slime-like creature with the intriguing ability to absorb nearby blocks. When it does so, the Sulfur Cube transforms into a ‘ball-like’ state, adopting properties based on the absorbed item. Players can revert it to its original form using Shears.
Currently, the Sulfur Cube can adopt nine different behaviour types that affect its movement and interaction with the environment. For example, the ‘light’ variant created from wool blocks is intended for applications like volleyball, whereas icy blocks can produce a ‘fast sliding’ version suitable for games reminiscent of curling.
Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, has also made adjustments to the mechanics of Beds and Slime Blocks. These changes allow Slime Blocks to continuously bounce mobs if air drag is removed. The developer has indicated that players may notice altered behaviours regarding the bounciness of these blocks as a result.
Additionally, the update transitions from OpenGL rendering to Vulkan, although OpenGL will still be accessible on older hardware. This shift aims to optimise graphics processing by favouring dedicated graphics cards over integrated systems. Players can review their current display settings by pressing the F3 key.
The Minecraft 1.26.2 snapshot is now available for users of the Java edition, and it can also be tested in the Bedrock preview. The full release of the Chaos Cubed update is anticipated in June, inviting players to explore the new mechanics and features that this snapshot unveils.
